Home Insurance Claims
Home Insurance in Grand Prairie, Arlington, Mansfield, Cedar Hill and Irving means different things to different people. To some it is an ever-protecting shield against all of life’s problems and to others, it may be just a protection from the worst. Based on your perception and expectations, a home insurance policy can be your best friend or your worst nightmare. Paying the premiums is always a little disheartening but well worth it when a loss occurs.
Many times I am called about a supposed loss from a leak in the roof. In Grand Prairie, homeowners insurance is difficult because of the old homes. Your insurance is there to protect you prom perils. Perils as defined by the dictionary is noun
1. exposure to injury, loss, or destruction; grave risk; jeopardy; danger:
They faced the peril of falling rocks.
2. something that causes or may cause injury, loss, or destruction.
Unfortunately an old roof does not qualify as a peril although I guess you could argue that it is in certain ways. Same with plumbing and the rest of the house. Taking care of an aging home is a homeowners responsibility AS a homeowner. The leak in the roof could have occurred from a windstorm or from a hail storm and it would be covered. The claims department would ask you the date the loss occurred. If you don’t know when it occurred then the chances of getting assistance diminishes drastically. With the old roof, you would want to reference back the difference in Actual Cash Value and Replacement Cost valuation in previous blogs. If you should have any questions, be sure and contact your agent.
